Born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Hervé Télémaque studied with painter Julien Lévi at the Art Students League in New York, 1957-1960. After moving to Paris in 1961 he met the surrealists and was soon attending their daily meetings and other events. The first reproductions of his works appeared in the fifth issue (October 1963) of the Surrealist Group's La Bréche (The breach) —the same issue that introduced Ted Joans (writing from Timbuktu) and the nascent Surrealist Group in Chicago. He also collaborated on such later surrealist periodicals as L’Archibras and the Bulletin de Liaison Surréaliste.
